Our small community playground in Berlin, Pennsylvania is in dire need of safe surfacing under our playground equipment so that the park meets U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines. This is the only community playground in our rural town and is run completely by volunteers. This project will benefit many low-income families by supporting children in this small farming community in Southwestern PA. According to the PA Dept. of Education, almost 40% of the families in the local school district qualify as low income. The mulch that will be utilized is non-toxic, pre-consumer virgin rubber mulch pieces that will not mold, disintegrate, or give off carcinogenic fumes. It is also extremely cost-effective long-term because it will not have to be replaced/topped off annually like wood mulch. Not only will the community come together to help raise funds but it will join in the prepping and applying of the mulch. It will truly be a community effort for our community park!
