Refugee families from the Central African Republic have lost a lot in crossing the border. As they try to rebuild their lives in refugee camps in southern Chad, for some it’s a daily struggle to provide for their families. In these difficult circumstances, girls are often the first to drop out of school to help with household chores, work, and reduce the burdens on their families by getting married early. However, with a little extra monthly support, we've found that refugee families have been able to keep their daughters in school. In 2021, FRI aims to support the school fees of 475 girls in 2 refugee camps and schools in southern Chad. School fees vary by school and level of education but on average, it costs $10.75 to send one girl to school for a year. The most vulnerable girls and families will be identified by community leaders to be supported through the payment of their school fees.
