HealEx is a healing-focused solution for women experiencing sexual exploitation. By bringing care directly to women who are currently in that terrible situation, HealEx helps improve their physical, mental and emotional health. As the saying goes, HealEx "takes the slums out of the people," which inspires them to get out of traumatic situations and to enter environments of their own volition where they can heal more deeply. This project brings much needed medical care and therapeutic support directly to women who are being sexually exploited in the Dominican Republic, which has the largest red light district in the Caribbean. Here women from many Latin American countries - almost half of which are Haitian refugees - experience the trauma of sexual exploitation, abuse, and illness. HealEx provides hygiene kits, nonperishable food, and other supplies to their patients as a means of connecting with them and opening opportunities for conversations about their health and other needs.
