Imagine waking up one day and you suddenly can't hear. Everything is silent. How will you communicate? How will you manage to function at work? You feel completely isolated, alone, and terrified. Cochlear implant recipients navigate both the deaf and hearing worlds. With their sound processors, they engage in the hearing world—attending school, working, socializing, enjoying media, and staying alert to sounds and safety cues. The external components wear out and need to be updated, replaced, or repaired across their lifetime. Many insurance companies do not cover these critical costs. JLCIF is the ONLY nonprofit in the United States that helps cochlear implant recipients with help for these ongoing costs-preventing them from losing their hearing a second time.
