In Sri Lanka, a country famous for its tea, I met a woman named Pushpa. She opened my eyes to the strenuous labor of tea plucking. Tea pluckers are traditionally local women; they are terribly overworked and underpaid. Earning a mere $2 USD for a full day in the fields, they live in extreme poverty. Pushpa was born into a family of tea pluckers but wanted a better life. She learned English and found a job at a coffee roasting house. Recognizing her potential to uplift other women, Pushpa created an apprenticeship program with Eliya Foundation. She trains local women in organic farming and guides them in pursuing new employment opportunities. Evolving beyond the terribly oppressive system of tea plantations, these women can earn more income, educate their children, and work toward a brighter future. The apprenticeship program costs $1000 per woman. My goal is to sponsor the January-June 2021 class! Please join me in supporting Pushpa and these incredibly deserving women!
