The Summer Reading with Friends program, hosted by Friends of the Children - Utah, aimed to enhance children's literacy skills by fostering a love for reading over an 8-week summer period. The program offered a fun, structured environment with weekly reading challenges, family events, and educational trips to encourage regular reading and exploration of different literary genres. Incentives like small rewards and certificates helped keep the children motivated, with special events celebrating their achievements. By the end of the summer, the children collectively read 120 books, surpassing the program’s goal while building a positive reading culture within their families and communities.

One of our participants proudly sharing his favorite book, Turkey Trouble! His excitement reflects the joy and engagement that the program has inspired in children throughout the summer.

Creating fun and comfortable spaces like this encourages young readers to explore new stories and share the joy of reading together.

Summer reading helps prevent the 'summer slide' by keeping children engaged in learning, enhancing literacy skills, and fostering a love for reading.
