Hawaii is the highest in the nation for babies born with a hearing loss at 4/1000. The national average is 2/1000. Less than 50% of children who are deaf or hard of hearing receive services before the age of 5 during the critical years for language development. Deaf Education Awareness Foundation (D.E.A.F.) is a newer nonprofit organization that advocates for families with children who are deaf to deliver consistent and regular services completely free to all families. Services include individual sessions with children, parent classes, and family counseling. D.E.A.F. is on a mission to serve 21 families in 2021. All funds go directly to deliver services to families free of charge. Services are virtual, allowing for a safe connection for families and children.
